The City of Johannesburg lists Zola as a local and provincial clinic on Buthelezi Street, open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 4pm. That is the schedule you can rely on.

There is a second, shorter session, and the City does not say which day

The City’s listing shows a second line for Zola reading 7.30am to 1pm, provincial service only. The day it applies to is missing from the page: the entry begins with a colon and no day name.

So a shorter weekend or extra session does exist, but which day it falls on is not published. It is not shown in the table above, because guessing between Saturday and Sunday would be worse than saying nothing. Phone 011 934 1000 to confirm before relying on it.

Local and provincial services sit in one building

Zola is one of the Soweto clinics that runs both City and provincial services from the same premises. That is why part of its schedule is flagged as provincial only: the two services are not necessarily available at the same times, and the shorter session covers only one of them.

No curative consultations are listed

The City lists Zola’s services as well baby, immunisation, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/Aids counselling, TB and other communicable diseases, health education and family planning. Curative care is not on that list, though several other clinics in the same region do offer it.

If you need to be seen about an illness, check first rather than joining the queue.

Arrive early

A 4pm close does not mean you can arrive at half past three. Public clinics stop taking new patients when the remaining queue will fill the rest of the day, and Mondays and month-end are the busiest.
