The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has extended its operating hours to help beneficiaries update their grant payment cards and transition from the gold SASSA card to the new black Postbank card[1]. SASSA and Postbank are working together to address the backlog and to ensure a smooth process for millions of grant recipients still needing new cards.
Operational hours have been extended from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm during both weekdays and weekends, allowing more time for card swaps and capturing beneficiary information[1][3]. This extension includes assigning two SASSA staff members per site to help manage long queues and provide onsite assistance[1]. Additionally, Postbank has increased its staffing and service sites to speed up replacements and improve service delivery for beneficiaries[3].
Mobile offices are being dispatched, particularly to rural areas, to reach as many people as possible[2]. The agency has also reduced staff training days and plans to introduce a cardless payment solution for those unable to collect new cards in time[3]. The card replacement deadline has been extended several times, with the current deadline set for 31 May 2025, ensuring beneficiaries have additional months to complete the transition[4][5][6].
