Clinic Operating Hours

If this is an emergency, do not wait to check opening hours. Go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call emergency services on 10177 from any phone, or 112 from a mobile. Emergency departments operate at all hours. Clinic hours are for planned visits, not urgent ones.

Clinic hours depend on the type of clinic

“Clinic” covers several different kinds of facility in South Africa, and they do not keep similar hours. Establish which one you need before looking for a time:

• Public clinics run by provincial health departments. These are generally weekday daytime services, and hours are set locally rather than nationally.
• Clinics inside pharmacies and retail stores, which are bound by the host store’s trading hours and may also depend on a nurse being on duty, so they can be narrower than the store itself.
• Private practices and day clinics, which set their own hours and usually work by appointment.
• Hospital outpatient departments, which are separate from the hospital’s emergency department and keep their own, shorter hours.

Staffed hours can be shorter than open hours

For clinics attached to a larger site, the door being open is not the same as the service being available. A retail clinic room depends on the nurse on duty, and specific services such as vaccinations or certain tests may run only on particular days or until a cut-off earlier in the day.

When the visit is for a specific service rather than a general consultation, confirm that the service is available at the time you plan to arrive, not just that the clinic is open.

Weekends and public holidays

Weekend availability is far more limited than weekday availability across every category above, and many clinics do not open at all on Sundays. Public holidays usually follow the Sunday pattern rather than the weekday one.

Outside those hours, the alternatives are a hospital emergency department, a private after-hours or casualty service, or a pharmacy for advice that does not need a consultation.

Confirm before travelling

Phone ahead. Clinic capacity varies day to day, and a clinic can stop taking new patients well before its closing time once the day’s queue is full. That is the most common reason a visit inside published hours still fails, and it is a question only the clinic can answer.
