The last Wednesday of the month opens later

Home Affairs publishes one schedule for offices open to the public: Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 15:30. The standing exception is the last Wednesday of each month, when offices open at 9:00 instead of 8:00 and still close at 15:30.

Note that this is the last Wednesday only, not every Wednesday. Other South African public bodies use an every-Wednesday pattern, so it is worth checking the date rather than assuming the rule you know from elsewhere applies here.

Closing at 15:30 is earlier than most services

Offices close to the public at 15:30, which is before the end of a normal working day. Queues are also cut off before closing time so that people already inside can be served, meaning the practical arrival deadline is earlier than 15:30.

For anything involving documents, biometrics or collection, arriving in the morning is materially more reliable than arriving after lunch.

Saturdays are announced separately

The published schedule covers weekdays. Home Affairs does periodically announce Saturday openings, sometimes across all offices, as part of specific campaigns or deadline periods.

Because those are announcements rather than a standing schedule, treat Saturday as something to confirm against current notices rather than assume in either direction.

Not every service runs from every office

Some services are handled at selected offices only, and some are offered through bank branches rather than a Home Affairs office at all. Smart ID and passport applications in particular are available at participating banks under the Department’s own arrangements.

Before travelling, confirm that the office you have chosen handles your specific service, not simply that it is open.

Office locations change: new offices open and others relocate. Check the Department’s official site for the office you intend to visit and for any current notice affecting its hours.
