Liquor hours are set by licence, not by the chain

This is the one retail category where trading hours are a legal question before they are a commercial one. A South African liquor outlet trades within the hours its licence permits, and liquor licensing is administered province by province rather than nationally.

Two stores under the same brand, in different provinces, can lawfully keep different hours. That is why no page in this section states a national schedule for a liquor chain.

Sunday and public holidays vary most

Sunday trading is where provincial rules and individual licences diverge most sharply, and public holidays follow the same pattern. If your trip depends on a Sunday or a public holiday, confirm that specific day with the specific store. Do not reason from another branch.

The liquor shop is not the supermarket

Most South African liquor chains sit alongside a supermarket owned by the same group. They are separate outlets with separate licences, and the liquor shop commonly closes earlier than the food store next to it. Confirming the supermarket’s hours tells you nothing reliable about the bottle store.

Centre hours sit on top of licence hours

A store inside a shopping centre cannot trade outside the centre’s own hours, whatever its licence allows. Where the two differ, the shorter one wins.
