Public holidays are where published hours stop being reliable

A public holiday overrides the weekly schedule, and most operators do not publish what the replacement is. This is the one situation where a phone call beats any directory, including this one.

Where an operator does publish holiday hours, the guides here say so explicitly, because it is rare enough to be worth stating.

Different sectors do different things

Banks and government offices close on public holidays. Supermarkets and malls generally trade reduced hours. Attractions frequently open and are at their busiest. Clinics and professional practices usually close entirely.

There is no single rule to apply across the day, which is why “is it a holiday” is only the first question.

The Sunday rule adds a day

Where a South African public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a public holiday. That turns a quiet weekend into a three-day closure for banks and government offices, and it catches people who checked only the holiday’s own date.

December is its own season

Between mid-December and early January many operators run extended retail hours and reduced service hours at the same time. Shops stay open later while the counters inside them, and the offices that support them, wind down or close for the period.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day close far more than a normal public holiday does.

Centres publish before their tenants do

Shopping centres tend to announce festive trading hours ahead of the individual shops inside them, and the centre’s schedule caps what any tenant can do. If a shop has not published anything, the centre’s announcement is the better guide.

Confirm the day before, not the day of

On the holiday itself, phones often go unanswered because the place is closed. Confirming during the last ordinary trading day before the holiday is the only reliable window.
